The Anglican parish priest who is opening up conversation and raising awareness by using the arts.

I’m the Anglican parish priest for Newton Heath, sent ‘by London’ to have a look at ministry here.

I’ve been here nearly 15 years convinced that the arts are a way to open conversation and raise awareness of a community which I perceive as overlooked in many ways.

It has a rich past, has had some tough times, and I am convinced that solutions to current problems lie in patterns and connections from the past.

This approach is encapsulated in a concept called ‘Street Wisdom’. I am not an obvious fit here, given my ‘background’ but that’s not an issue as we learn from what we can share.

What role do you think creativity plays in your community?

Not enough [of a role], because there is poverty of opportunity in places like Newton Heath: music; drama; art. It could and should play a lot more. This is where our building comes in.

Which creative work/project are you most proud of?

Series consultant for three series of BBC2/Big Talk Production’s ‘Rev’ starring Tom Hollander and Olivia Colman. Series 1 won the BAFTA for best new comedy.
